FitStation: A hidden two-level gym gem in Vientiane Laos

First Impressions ⭐⭐⭐

Tucked into the heart of Vientiane, FitStation surprised me in the best way. From the outside, you wouldn't expect much—but once inside, this place opens up into a solid two-level setup that packs way more than you'd think at first glance.

To access the gym, you'll pay your day pass at the street-level booth before climbing the stairs to reach the training areas on levels 1 and 2. It's a little unconventional, but part of the charm. We visited on a Saturday morning around 9am and had the entire place to ourselves for the first hour—bliss!

The Space ⭐⭐⭐⭐

FitStation spreads across two floors with a clean, well-ventilated environment and a thoughtfully designed layout:

  • Upstairs: Dedicated strength training area with most resistance machines and free weights

  • Downstairs: Cardio equipment, stretching zone, squat racks, deadlift platform, and bathrooms

The climate control is exceptional for Southeast Asia—multiple pedestal fans, wall-mounted fans, air conditioning units, and air diffusers keep the place comfortable even during the hottest Laotian days.

What impressed me most was the intentional spacing between equipment. There's enough open area to move freely without stepping on anyone's toes, making it feel designed by people who actually use gyms rather than just trying to pack in as much equipment as possible.

Equipment ⭐⭐⭐

For a traveler-friendly gym, the equipment variety here hits well above its weight class. While the free weights max out at 40kg (which may disappoint serious powerlifters), there's plenty here for most strength-focused workouts:

  • 2 × Smith Machines

  • 2 × Cable Machines

  • 2 × Squat Racks (downstairs)

  • Deadlift platform (downstairs)

  • Free weights (up to 40kg)

  • Barbell rank – straight and ezy bar

  • Multiple flat benches

  • Plate-loaded machines: chest press, abdominal, pec-deck, fly, multiple back machines, row

  • Leg equipment: leg press, extensions, leg curl, calf machine, hip abductor, hack squat

  • Good variety of attachments available

  • TRX robes

  • Exercise balls and Ab benches

  • Mirrors throughout and dedicated stretching area downstairs

The machines are in solid condition, though they lack small incremental weight plates (1.25kg, 2.5kg), which might frustrate some lifters trying to make precise progressions. The biomechanics of all the machine were excellent.

Amenities & Facilities

  • Lockers: Available

  • Showers: Available with hot water (bring your own toiletries and towel)

  • Water: Refill station available upstairs however it is always safer to bring your own bottled water

  • Wi-Fi: Not offered

  • Towel service: Available

Atmosphere ⭐⭐

While practically empty during our 9am Saturday visit, staff mentioned it gets busier on weekday evenings (5-8pm). The morning offers the most peaceful training experience.

The vibe was calm, focused, and respectful—ideal for solo training sessions.

Pricing ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Current rates as of May 2025 (always verify directly with the gym):

  • Day Pass: 100,000 kip

Payment methods: Cash only (ATM available 2 blocks away)

My Verdict

Pros:

  • Friendly and straightforward check-in process

  • Spacious layout with excellent airflow

  • Well-equipped for general strength training

  • Not crowded on a Saturday morning

  • Clean and well-maintained

  • Affordable pricing

Cons:

  • Dumbbells only go to 40kg (not a con for me, but worth noting!)

  • Plate-loaded machines lack small incremental weights

  • No group classes but not relevant when travelling

  • Limited cardio equipment variety

How Does It Compare?

FitStation ranks the highest among the 3 gyms I visited when Laos. While not as flashy Fitness World in the city center, it offers significantly better equipment. I would highly recommend you download Loca (the Uber equivalent in Loas) and make the short drive (6mins) to this gym for your workouts when in Vientiane.

Must-Dos

  • Bring your own towel and water bottle

  • Always wipe down equipment after use

  • Respect in-house rules and fellow lifters

  • Consider visiting during morning hours to avoid crowds

  • Tops on for males – girls train in your sports bra
